The MLC Seeking Suggestions for Songwriter Candidates for Seats on Board of Directors and Pair of Advisory Committees

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (The MLC) is now seeking suggestions for songwriter candidates to be considered for seats on its Board of Directors, Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee and Dispute Resolution Committee.

Under the Music Modernization Act (MMA), certain governance positions at The MLC are reserved for representatives of songwriters. These positions include four members of The MLC’s Board of Directors, five members of the Dispute Resolution Committee and five members of the Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee.

Candidates for the Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee and Dispute Resolution Committee must be professional songwriters. The Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee recommends to the Board policies and procedures related to the distribution of unclaimed accrued royalties. The Dispute Resolution Committee recommends to the Board policies and procedures for the processing of royalties related to works that are subject to disputes over ownership.

Candidates for the Board of Directors must be professional songwriters who retain and license mechanical rights for songs they have written.

Board and committee members sit for three-year terms and may be reelected.  Certain board and committee member terms expire this year and suggestions for the seats are being considered. Seats are filled pursuant to The MLC’s Bylaws. Songwriter Director selections are also subject to appointment by the Librarian of Congress.

The MLC Board of Directors and committees meet regularly, and all meetings allow for virtual participation such that travel is not generally required. Members are expected to devote sufficient time to prepare for and particulate fully in all meetings.
